Cards Against the Manosphere

Cards Against the Manosphere

Why we joined forces with Bernie to create our new range of cards.

If you watched Louis Theroux's Inside the Manosphere you might have had one of those quietly unsettling realisations: there's a whole world the algorithm is serving to our boys that a lot of us had absolutely no idea about.

Not on the fringes. In their pockets. In their bedrooms Every day.

We started LoveLossDiscoballs because we believed words matter. That a card in someone's hands at the right moment can do something a text message or a social media post can't. It can be held. Kept. Read again. Displayed on a mantelpiece as a reminder of how much someone really cares.

Which is exactly why, when we connected with Andrew 'Bernie' Bernard, it felt like something clicking into place.

Who is Bernie?

Bernie is a speaker, author, and educator who has spent years walking into schools and talking to young people about toxic masculinity, coercive control, and what it really means to be a man. He's reached millions of people across the UK. He does this work not because it's easy, but because he knows what's at stake when boys are left to find their own answers online.

He brings his own experience to this. He lost his sister to a partner who displayed the worst traits of coercive control and violence. Rather than turn away from that grief, he turned toward it - and has spent years making sure other families don't face the same loss.

When we spoke to Bernie about what was missing in the greeting card world, he said it immediately: cards for men and boys that say something real. Something beyond cars, pints, and sport. Something that meets them where they are and says: you can be more than what the algorithm is telling you.

Why now?

We didn't make this range in response to a documentary or a cultural moment. We were already making it. Because Bernie has been doing this work for years- long before it became a mainstream conversation - and because we could see the gap on the shelves long before the rest of the world started talking about it.

But the timing does mean something. Louis Theroux's Inside the Manosphere brought these conversations into living rooms that might not have been having them before. And when people are already talking, the right words land differently.

We're not naive enough to think a greeting card dismantles an ideology. But we do believe that culture shifts incrementally, and that the messages boys receive from the people who love them - in the everyday, ordinary moments - matter enormously. A card from a parent. From an uncle. From a mate. That says: I see you. I'm proud of you. And this is what I think a good man looks like.

That's not nothing. That's everything.

The range

The What Makes a Man range carries messages including:

"Boys will be… anything they want to be."

"Strong men admit their failures and vulnerabilities."

"Real men can show kindness without being weak."

Bold in design. Unambiguous in intent. And - because this is LLDB - made with colour and heart.

As with everything we do, a portion of proceeds from the range will be donated to CALM, the UK's leading movement against male suicide. Because the two things are connected. They always have been.

A final thought

We started this brand around grief, mental health, and the things we don't say often enough to the people we love. The What Makes a Man range sits right at the heart of that founding idea.

If the words we give young men help them feel less alone, less like they have to perform toughness, less like vulnerability is a weakness - then we've done something worthwhile.

Thank you for being part of this with us.
